This CNN article was published on December 8, 2018 by Sophie Tatum, and Erica Orden, Jeremy Herb, Katelyn Polantz and Marshall Cohen contributed. Former Nixon white house lawyer, John Dean, thinks congress will impeach President Trump. John Dean has served time in prison for being involved with the Watergate scandal. For the first time prosecutors have said Cohen acted under Trump's orders when he paid women that claimed to be sexually assaulted by Trump to be silent. Trump denied this affair and hasn't been accused of any crimes related to this incident. Cohen pleaded guilty to the charges in August and stated that he was directed by Trump. In the sentencing memo from the Manhattan US attorney's office, prosecutors stated that Cohen has admitted to the payments and acted in coordination with and at the direction of the President.
This Department of Justice has declared that since 1973 that it will be unconstitutional to prosecute a sitting president. Trump will just be known as someone who participated in a criminal conspiracy but isn't charged. President Richard Nixon was identified int he same way in the Watergate scandal. President Trump could get impeached for anything they believe is impeachable. Impeachment isn't limited to indictment crimes but to the abuse of power and beach of trust.
Only 2 presidents have been impeached in history. The first was Andrew Johnson for dismissing Edwin M. Stanton as secretary of war in 1868. The last president that was impeached was Bill Clinton in December 1998 for perjury and obstruction of justice. President Nixon faced impeachment but resigned before the process was completed.
