Jesus Ibarra of California was arrested Thursday for stealing a whopping (no pun intended) 7,500 pounds of candy from Mars Candy Co. truck full of candy that had not passed inspection. The candy was being shipped to San Bernardino from Hesperia and the stolen candy was only found after the truck arrived. Ibarra had stolen the candy to open his own candy store in his garage, according to ads that led investigators to him. Ibarra had 30 racks of boxes full of candy with prices labeled.
I can't believe he was able to steal so much candy out of one truck! The historical analysis of this may be something like the Credit Mobilier scandal or the Whiskey Ring, although this is obviously not as big. In all accounts I wonder how it could have even been accomplished on the level it was. All events were scams to get rich and these make you think about why crime in America is so bad. It seems to be just America with these high rates of crime and murder. Is it just America or is it the world?
To answer your question, I think it happens everywhere. People are always going to want to "get rich fast" like during the 20's with pyramid scheme and what not, rather than putting in the hard work it takes to be successful.
ReplyDeleteThis is terrible. And who would want to buy candy out of someone's garage anyways?
ReplyDeleteThis cracks me up because we are talking about a candy robber here, even if it is concerning the serious notion of theft. But really dude, there are other ways to start a small business.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! Why would someone do this? People are crazy!! What a story..
ReplyDeleteI like how you connected this story to the Credit Mobilier scandal!

I'm sure that this guy thought this was a good plan to begin with, but who would want to buy candy out of some random guys garage?
