This morning a Missouri college professor, Melissa Click, was charged with third-degree assault for "scuffling with a journalist" (Schierbecker) during a November protest demonstration over "perceived racial issues". Apparenlty the student was attempting to film the squad but upon noticing him, the professor wished to shoo him out for promoting and filming.
Fox News published the story, stating "The video, which was quickly posted to YouTube, showed Click
confronting videographer Mark Schierbecker during a campus protest on
Nov. 9 and apparently trying to block him from shooting video on a
public quad. At one point, Schierbecker asks to speak with Click, who
promptly tells him to leave.
'No, you need to get out,' she says, pointing away and then seeming
to grab Schierbecker’s camera. 'You need to get out. You need to get
out.'
When Schierbecker refuses to leave, Click yells to a group of nearby
demonstrators: 'Who wants to help me get this reporter out of here? I
need some muscle over here.'"
This could be considered an assault against free speech and the freedom of the press, so it's understandable as to why she might have been issued this degree. It seems especially shocking to some because of the racially degrading manner the situation surrounded, what with the protest and school issues. However, is it right the woman should be charged with third-degree assault? Or is it possible there was a different side to the story as to why the student and professor acted the way they did.

Nicholas Godfrey Period 8:
ReplyDeleteThird degree assault? Did she ever assault the student in a serious manner? I understand an assault charge for trying to push the student out or whatever the circumstance was but not third degree.
Matthew Taylor Period 5: There doesn't seem to be enough information in the news about any sort of details, so for now the punishment seems a bit harsh.
ReplyDeletethe punishment does not reflect in any way what happened, according to the information we have from this article.

I feel that the punishment seems too harsh. I mean, maybe we are missing information, but still.
