"Oscars make changes to boost diversity amid #OscarsSoWhite backlash" - Leah Messinger(period 1)

Many people were outraged this past week when the Oscar nominees were announced and there was an extreme lack in diversity throughout the selection. Some of the industry's biggest stars have protested which only got the ball rolling. This flooding of complaints led to a unanimous vote placed on Thursday night by the Academy which approved changes that they hope will double the number of women and diverse members of the Academy by 2020.
It is extremely sad to see that as developed as our country is we can still not seem to fully recognize everyone. It is truly heartbreaking that some powerful and talented actors were not nominated for their outstanding work. While racism has improved immensely over the years, it is still seen in today's society. On the other hand, who is to say that the actors nominated didn't also all equally deserve the nomination. While it is a very touchy subject, it is one that ignited a spark of controversy. Overall, everyone should be equally evaluated and represented in all situations of society.

  1. I think that even though everyone says the issue of racism has been fully resolved, it is still very evident in society, in some aspects more than others. Racism isn't solved just by allowing blacks to vote, it is almost fully in the way people treat blacks and act around them. It is definitely still a big issue and it should not be.

  2. It is sad to see that our country still consists of racism. However, this problem can't just all of a sudden be fixed. I am happy to see that the Academy is taking action to end the racism.

  3. There is still a long road to equality in our country and this is a prime example of the racism still present today.
