Dwight and Steven Hammond lit fires on federal property so that invasive plants wouldn't grow and wildfires wouldn't occur. The two were convicted and served time in jail. The men were trying to create a landscape that people could own instead of government and that served as place to hike, fish, and grow plants. Also, it would be a location used for ranching and mining. Residents really liked this idea but federal land managers said this was a step too far and made the town of Burns section off. Bundy and the other leaders are in jail waiting for another court hearing currently.
The article mentions the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge created in 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt. After all of his hard work to preserve the land, this is quite disappointing. Specifically, the rest area for migrating birds needs to stay there because "20 percent of the state's breeding population of greater sandhill cranes."
