Summary: 18 year old Andrej Ciesielski was touring Egypt, when he decided to do something illegal but he thought it woulds definitely be worth it. He runs a blog in which he posts about all his adventures, so he thought that it would be appropriate to make a stop at the pyramids of Giza. He saw an opportunity that he knew that the photos would be worth the consequence. When nobody was looking, he quickly hopped the fence and scaled the Great Pyramid of Giza. He made it up very quickly. He did this knowing that the penalty could end up with him in jail for three years. About halfway up the pyramid, the police noticed him climbing. He continued his ascent and got all the photos and video he wanted from his GoPro. He slowly went down the pyramid and turned himself into police custody. The authorities were going to take him to the German Embassy, but instead let him go on account that he would delete all footage and photos. He "deleted" them, but the authorities didn't know that he had software that allowed him to recover all of the files.
Analysis: I think this is awesome! This kid realized how cool the footage would be from the top, and decided that the risk was worth it. I was reading this, and at first I was kind of irritated by the fact that the police took him in. He didn't hurt anything by climbing it, so I was mad that they would make him delete the photos too (although he ended up not). Re-analyzing it, I realized that if he hadn't been taken into custody, anybody would think they could do it too, and then this amazing landmark will be destroyed. This is like when Theodore Roosevelt set aside land to be designated as national parks, to preserve areas from destruction. I just hope that the Egyptian authorities don't try to extradite him once they see these videos. If you want to watch the video of him climbing it, here is the link: https://youtu.be/s6X-1ShM8uA
