Listeria Outbreak in Packaged Salads--Becca Brandt 4th

11 people have been hospitalized recently after eating packaged salads from grocery stores. One has even died. The cause of this is listeria found in the packaged salads. It has been said by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the packaged salads are all from a company in Springfield, Ohio, run by Dole, however the salads were all under a variety of names: Dole, Fresh Selections, Simple Truth, Marketside, The Little Salad Bar, and President's Choice. The 12 hospitalized victims came from 6 different states. These incident reports started all the way back in July. The investigation began in September but has not been successful until this month. As of Thursday, Dole had stopped all production of the salads and on Friday, the FDA announced a recall. This year alone, there have been about 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths due to listeria.

This article frightened me because this could've happened to me. I eat packaged salads once or twice a week. I am lucky that none of the salads I ate had strains of listeria in them. Similarly, a few months ago, the Listeria scare happened in the Blue Bell Factory. That is also something I eat regularly. It is very unfortunate what happened to these people, but I am glad it was not me. These food companies need to get the Listeria under control!

  1. This is very scary and definitely relates to the Pure Food and Drug Act that was established. People are trying to produce food faster and in bigger quantities and as a result it is loosing quality and, ultimately, harming people.

  2. I agree with Jsway, this relates to the Pure Food and Drug Act. These companies are continually growing which means faster production and then effects the quality of the food.
