The Supreme Court has agreed to review President Obama's actions from 2014 on preventing around 5 million illegal immigrants from being deported. The executive actions would allow immigrants to apply for a three-year work permit allowing they pass a background check, register with the government, submit biometric data, and establish they are eligible for relief. Among those eligible to apply include parents who had children born in or are lawful citizens of the U.S., children who were brought illegally into this country before 2010. Many states are opposed to this plan and are threatening to sue, among of which includes Texas. The Obama Administration however says the states do not possess the right to challenge the plan in federal court.
This represents another example of the theme: federal government versus state governments. Immigration remains a key issue in America. The case will be argued in April and decided by late June in the midst of a heated 2016 presidential election where this topic will be highly debated.
