Robo-Deer by Matthew Homsher 9th

Summary: Two hunters were arrested in Maryland after unknowingly shooting a robo-deer, a technology used by the Maryland Natural Resources Police, designed to catch hunters hunting illegally or out of season. The park owns three robo animals for this purpose: robo-deer, robo-bear, and robo-turkey. The hunters, David Few, age 21, and Brian Stitley, age 24, were driving down a road in Leonardtown when they got out of their truck, directed flashlights at the deer, and proceeded to shoot the dummy several times with crossbows. They were greeted, not long after, by Maryland authorities. However, even though most of the charges were dropped because the robo-deer sustained only minor injuries, the Maryland Natural Police Resources now know that their robo-deer works effectively.

Synopsis: Those hunters deserved to get caught. They shot the deer multiple times and still didn’t realize it was a robot. However, the more important issue is the rapid growth in technology. The people of our generation have made a robo-deer. A few years ago microwaves were new tech and smart phones were sci-fi. Now we have robo-deer that help to catch criminals. It sounds like science fiction. It makes me wonder if things like this were so amazing in the industrial age. Did people think about packaged food and skyscrapers in the same way? Did they look at telegraphs and light bulbs and wonder what kind of fantasy world they were living in? This might not be a question for the computer age, but a question for all new technology. Are we realizing our own science fiction?
