"Kate del Castillo, Actress Tied to El Chapo, Set Up Sean Penn Meeting" By Lisl Wangermann Period 1

Elisabeth Malkin's article "Kate del Castillo, Actress Tied to El Chapo, Set Up Sean Penn Meeting," was published by the New York Times on January 10, 2016. After her portrayal of a drug trafficker in a popular Spanish soap opera, del Castillo was contacted by the infamous drug lord, El Chapo, over Twitter. He asked her to produce a movie about his life, and Sean Penn, interested by the idea, asked her to set a meeting up between him and El Chapo, which she did. She also in attendance. This is not the first time del Castillo has caused a stir. Her outspoken opinions got her in trouble when Mexico's first lady bought an large house under suspicious circumstances. Now she is set to portray a fictional Mexican first lady in a Netflix Spanish language television series.

Actresses and other pop culture icons have often played roles in significant current events. For example, Marilyn Monroe was allegedly President John F. Kennedy's mistress. Many actors have even become important politicians themselves, including Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. This examples, including this recent situation with Kate del Castillo, show how people who rise to fame through pop culture can use that fame to play role in the world affairs, not just on screen. This examples also warn that if the wrong people become famous due to their roles on television, it could severely impact that world.

Interesting perspective on the whole affair. I find it fascinating that El Chapo was able to use social media whilst on the run.
