Same Sex Marriage Bans are Lifted in 5 More States- Lauren Kuehmeier, Period 2

Today, October 6th 2014 officials for the state of Virginia began issuing same sex marriage licenses to couples. The same should soon also be expected from Indiana and Wisconsin. This blossoming marriage equality is thanks to our Supreme Court, who refused to hear the cases of the states (Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and Indiana) that wanted to keep their bans. Since the Supreme Court refused to hear the cases, this could mean that states such as West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming might also have to lift their bans against same sex marriage. This would mean that 30 of the 50 states in America allow same sex marriage.

While change was slow for same sex marriage for quite some time, a real uproar is happening that can hopefully keep its momentum. The next step is for the Supreme Court can rule that same sex marriage will be aloud in all 50 of our states. It is so important for us to have this equality, because America is a country looked up to by many others and once our people are given this freedom we can expect it from all around the world.

  2. This is really great news, considering the fact that LGBTQ people have done nothing wrong in the first place to have their rights taken away. -Azra

  3. first of i think states should decided wether or not to allow it not the supreme court and secondly not all of us view this as a good thing. I wish states would keep their bans on same sex marriage.

    1. Let's take a logical approach to the issue. Marriage is a LEGAL union between two parties. That definition includes nothing about religion, or "sanctity", etc. We must also remember that the USA is a SECULAR country. If you take away religious arguments, which are invalid in this secular government, there are practically no reasons to oppose gay marriage. It won't affect you, and it only leads to happier people.
