Man Running In Inflatable Bubble Rescued Off the Coast of Florida - Corsica Steding

Reza Baluchi, an ultra-marathon runner, was rescued by the coast guard after trying to "run" to Bermuda in his "hydro pod bubble."  The Coast Guards first encountered him last Wednesday, when they found him in his bubble with protein bars, bottled water, a GPS and a satellite phone. The Coast Guard proceeded to inform Baluchi that he did not have enough supplies and that the voyage would be very dangerous.  He ended up asking Baluchi to quit his journey, but Baluchi refused to get out of his bubble.  The Coast Guard continued to monitor Baluchi's journey until Baluchi activated his personal locating beacon.  At that point, they rescued Baluchi and took him back to the coast.

Ralph Ellis wrote this article for CNN on October 4th.  Before reading this article, I had heard vague facts about the event.  This article was written in order to inform anyone interested in the story and to update people on the details of the event.  It's hard to believe that someone would have such a strong motivation to venture on such an odd journey.  His reasoning for doing such a thing is still unclear.  Some people think that he tried to do it in order to promote peace and some say it was simply for the sense of accomplishment.

  1. Wow, this is actually pretty funny. I think that I I had the resources to do this, I probably would. It sounds like a great opportunity to go test limits in an unconventional way.

  2. Agreed with the first comment: what was his motivation? Just because? Politcal statement? Some type of rebellion? Because he wanted to do something cool?

  3. Was this part of a larger scale race? It seems that he must have been out for his own enjoyment rather than trying to prove a point by potentially putting his life in danger. The coast guard was right for trying to convince the man to stop his voyage and take him back to shore.

  4. This type of endeavor is simply comical, I respect his ingenuity along with his out-of-the-box thinking. He is awful courageous to take on this type of adventure.

  5. This is quite an interesting goal to set. Maybe this is going to become a new sport. I think if he really wanted to complete the task he should of thought it through. He could of had a boat follow him just to make sure he was safe and guide him.
