Parents, be aware of bullying sites you've never seen/ Arlesia McGowan Period 4

No, this current event isn't just for parents, that is just the name of the article; but I would assume parents would be surprised to read this article. We all know Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram...I mean, who doesn't? Teens have no problem bullying on those sites, but as always, there are the apps that most people still don't know about going behind the scenes, being used for the new bullying tool. The biggest of these is Ask.fm, something that was never really popular, but is now. A 12 year old girl Rebecca Sedwick killed herself after getting hateful messages from Ask.fm and Kik as well. As proof of this, before she took to her death she received the message of "Why aren't you dead?", from an anonymous writer. It is totally understandable. Parents, who think they are so tech savvy, think again because kids have moved onto other sites, mainly apps such as Snapchat, Kik messenger, Voxer, and Ask.fm which is the main website. Sameer Hinduja, co-director of cyber bullying research states that teens usually get Ask.fm or whatever sight because they want a feeling a validation about themselves, but unfortunately sometimes it takes the opposite effect. Experts now urge parents to be actively involved in their childrens' lives.
Honestly, in my opinion, if you take the initiative, you fall in the trap. I think that since you could probably avoid cyber bullying by maybe not getting those social websites, it could be some of the teens fault; however noone has the right to bully anyone for any circumstance. Parents do need to have a smidgen of the action of whats going on in their child's, life so he or she can listen to their child if something wrong should happen

Honestly i don't see the point in Ask.fm. I have said this before that its just a website for kids to get bullied. But, kids knows this before they get one. They know that it is possible for them to get bullied but they get one anyway. The website is so ridiculous and should be shutdown to prevent future deaths of insecure teenagers. -Nia Edwards 4th period
ReplyDeleteI think that Ask.fm is not smart for kids to have because it makes everyone question who is who. The person who made it knew that there would be some sort of bullying going on in the app. Ask.fm, Kik, Snapchat and Voxer are just a trend that everyone is following and some people think it is cool to bully over these apps, but it isn't. It is very sad to hear that a girl killed herself because of these apps.
ReplyDeleteThere are definitely major consequences that can arise from issues on social media but if you take your own life because of a message on Ask.fm there is another issue at hand.I believe that adults should take steps to ensure social and emotional health all around as social media isn't the biggest issue.
