Byron Otis- Sea World Responds to Critical New Documentary

A documentary that premiered at this year's Sundance Festival, Blackfish, deals with the mistreatment and captivity of Killer Whales, and the harm their captivity causes them and those who deal with them, specifically, the death of Sea World trainer Dawn Brancheau. Sea World, of course, feels the movie does not adequately represent their side of the issue, and released a statement backing themselves up, saying that it does not mention Sea World's extensive rescue operations for aquatic creatures, and that it portrays them as merely an amusement park, when they are "one of the most respected zoological institutions in the world."

It's difficult to have a concrete opinion on this issue, for me, without having seen the documentary. This article focuses more on Sea World's response to the documentary, and thus, I believe more that Sea World wasn't in the wrong.

  1. I find this interesting, because documentaries often seem to be "selling a point," instead of say, documenting. They are powerful instruments of persuasion, and perhaps it is best to question some of the opinions presented in such films and most importantly remember that they are often opinions. However, having no knowledge of the situation, I have no opinion on the particular film you mention.
