This
article, by Susan Davis, highlights the details of the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act. The Act bans bias by employers based on gender identity
or sexual orientation, with the exception of the military and religious
organizations. According to the article, this act was first presented in
Congress in 1994 and nearly passed in 1996, but has not been given a full vote
since this time. Although there is not as robust support for the Act in
Republicans, most believe the Act will be passed because of support from less
conservative Republicans.
Upon seeing the title for this
article, I was excited to read it. I am thrilled that this is a time in which advances
are being made and bills like this one can even be considered. There is no way
for progress to be made without people pushing for the passage of innovative
bills. I hope the Employment Non-Discrimination Act is a success, even if that
success occurs nearly twenty years after its original introduction. People
deserve equal treatment no matter where they work, and the passage of this Act
will largely improve the likelihood of egalitarian workplaces.

This is so exciting! Yay for America taking baby steps toward equality
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that this Act is finally going to be voted on again after such a long time! I'm happy that equality is becoming such a prominent topic in Congress.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's been almost 20 years since we have decided to finally pass this. It's about time. I'm really glad that it's something we are excited to get out of the way and done. Congress is just a few steps behind the rest of America as far as gay equality goes.
