This article was posted today at 6:03 pm. Libya's state news agency says that the van was headed towards Libya's Central Bank with foreign and local currency. As soon as it entered Sirte from the airport, it was stopped by ten angry Sirte men, who took 53m Libyan dinars as well as $12m in US dollars and Euros. Only one security vehicle had been assigned to guard the van and the guards were "unable to resist the 10 attackers," according to the Lana news agency. Since the 2011 Civil War, Libya has suffered continuing lawlessness. " The robbery is a catastrophe for the whole of Libya," said Abdel-Fattah Mohammed, head of Sirte council. This is not the first time something like this has happened. In July, two banks were robbed by Sirte attackers, who stole 500,000 dinars ($606,605). Libya is "lawless" because the Prime Minister, Ali Zeidon was kidnapped, it highlighted the power of the militias plan to overthrow Gadaffi in 2011, which still prevent the government from exercising a lot of power. It is now two years after Gadaffi being overthrown, and the elected government still does not hold a lot of power. The militia is stronger than the army units, and is often more armed than the police, which is why it was easy for them to overpower the minister's bodyguards. Libya's government is not in control of the country at all.
For those who do not know where Libya is, here's a map:
I think what's going on in Libya is awful. Their government is out of control. I posted this to remind my classmates that although our government has just "recovered" from a shut down, other countries have it way worse. Their Prime Minister was kidnapped! This also taught me about a Civil War I didn't even know existed and I actually want to look into it a little more. I encourage you guys to start posting current events from other countries. It teaches you a lot about what's going on in other parts of the world. Sometimes we forget that America is not the only country that has news.
