Leslie Kelly: US judge tells man he's still legally dead
It's such a strange concept, that in the eyes of the law you can be "dead" even when you're quite clearly not. Apparently some rather hapless guy in Ohio found himself an alcoholic and behind in child support payments and, naturally, decided to skip town back in the '80s. After eight years of being missing, the man, Donald Miller Jr., was declared dead, while in reality he was just chilling out in Florida and Georgia. He returned to Ohio in 2005 only to have a court tell him that the eyes of the law still regard him as dead, which will take three years to undo. It's all very odd. Moral of the story, kids--when life gives you lemons, don't run away to another state and stay missing for so long that you're declared dead. Evidently that can make your life rather complicated.

I find that actually somewhat funny. I thought you were only declared dead when a body was found but I guess not.

DeleteThat's really odd. I wonder why no missing persons report was filed?
ReplyDeleteRight? Apparently you can just be missing for so long that they decide you must be dead, I guess...I wish the writer had added more details about the initial investigation
ReplyDeleteStrange at how long it will take to apply changes to consider him, well living again.
