Summary: NBA
legend, Bill Russell, was arrested this week at Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle, Washington for
allegedly having a gun in his possession. Russell was arrested on Wednesday and issued a state citation for having the
weapon in a prohibited area of the airport, according to Perry Cooper, a
Seattle Police Department spokesman.
After
Russell was issued the citation, he was released. “He had a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun”, said Lisette Garcia, a
Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman.
The gun was found during a screening
of carry-on-bags. "Firearms, ammunition, firearm parts and realistic
replicas of firearms are always prohibited in carry-on baggage. However, these
items can be transported in checked baggage provided the traveler declares them
to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process," a TSA
statement said. Along with the citation Russell could be fined up to $7,500.
Analysis: I
wonder why Bill Russell would have a gun. Maybe he was using it for hunting or
security reasons, but it seems very strange that he would need to travel with a
gun. The fine that he might eventually have to pay is next to nothing for
someone like him, but this negative publicity might mess up his reputation. I am glad no one was accidently harmed with
the weapon.
