A poll taken by Gallup compares the acceptance or support of legalizing marijuana from the 1960's to today. Apparently the American population has significantly increased their support in the legalization of this substance from 12% to 58%. The percentages range throughout different groups. The lowest support comes from Americans over the age of 69 and republicans. The more supportive percentage of the poll were Democrats and those 18 to 29. Those from 30 to 60 years old were just an average group however the percentages in their group are increasing rapidly. The idea is that because of the recent surge in social acceptance people have started to accept the use of marijuana as well. Also, the medical benefits contribute to the new widespread acceptance. I think that it's great that Americans are finally starting to realize the benefits and joys of this plant. It is much healthier than a lot of prescription pills. I feel because marijuana was grouped with other hard core drugs people associated the plant with gangs, prostitution, murders, assaults, and other drug related tragedies. The truth is marijuana has caused no deaths except for the hundreds of Americans who've gotten the death penalty for sale and possession. The only way it's severely harmed anyone on it's own is by being illegal.

I agree. There are also considerable economic consequences for keeping marijuana illegal. Legalization would likely mitigate drug wars in marijuana producing countries.
ReplyDeleteFelicia Padilla 5th period: the fact that no one has actually died from marijuana I think is a big contributing factor to more more support of legalizing the drug.
ReplyDeleteI dont know why making marijuana legal is such a big thing. We already know weve had trouble with marijuana and people before so I dont know what makes it so safe now. No one kind of drug is safe, not one. Once you give people the power to have the drug, they will just abuse it!
ReplyDeleteOh, they already have the drug. If people want it, they will certainly get it. It's the illegality of it that's causing problems. People are only abusing it by using it while it's against the law. While I do not condone the foolishness of disregarding the law, I do believe that marijuana should be legalized--with proper regulations--for socioeconomic reasons. And as for "no one kind of" drug being safe; what of medical drugs (which often includes the usage of medical marijuana)?
