Jordan Lewis a 15-year-old committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest because he was being severely bullied. "The suicide note he left stated that he was tired of life ... and that he was doing this because he was being bullied at school,". A day before Jordan committed suicide his class watched a video on bully and t the end of the video the person getting bullied committed suicide. After they watched the video they say Jordan leaned over to a classmate and told them a out his plans. The girl wasn't identified. A day after that his mother found him dead. Carterville Schools Superintendent Robert Prusator really wanted the children to see the video on alcohol, drugs, and bullying. None of the staff was aware that Jordan had been being bullied. "Our priority right now is counseling for our students and staff," he said in a telephone interview. "The kids are trying to get through his passing.".

Analysis:
This is a tough one I would say, I feel like the video was necessarily the reason why he committed suicide just because of the fact that he could have done it at anytime. I just feel like it was all in the timing of how everything happened. For his father to be blaming it on the video I feel its just an escape or an easy place to place the fault. Also, I feel like the classmate he told he was going to commit suicide, she should have said something because maybe they could have prevented it from happening. If someone told me they were going to commit suicide I definitely wouldn't just shrug it off, I would let someone know.

It truly saddens me that a video shown IN SCHOOL, a safe place, assisted a child in making a decision that would change the people around him forever. Schools need to look more closely in what they are showing kids, in order to make sure it isn't thought- altering or dangerous to kid's minds.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really look too closely and I obviously should have. But wow this is just terrible. Someone can easily help keep someone alive by speaking up especially if they know for certain. - Michelle ZUniga
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad. It is so unfortunate that the video shown in class could have assisted the kid in the decision to commit suicide. Bullying has been a problem for awhile now. However, it seems to be slowing down. I know it will never go away, but I think there are more effective preventive measures that schools need to take to ensure the safety of their students.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say whether or not the video gave him the idea to commit suicide or if he was already planning on it. The girl he told should have spoken up about his comments, because the topic of suicide should never be taken lightly. I personally think that if they're going to show a bullying video in school it should not end with suicide, or if it does be sure to explain afterwards that suicide is never the option.
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad that something like this happened to a boy who was only a year younger than us. I believe that part of a teacher's job is to look out for all of the students and observe what is going on, which is why I find it hard to believe that none of the faculty were aware that he was being bullied.
