Felicia Padilla 5th period: "Here's why Vermont Has The Highest Rate of Illicit Drug Use in America"

Summary: 15% of people in Vermont admit to using an illicit drug in the past month. This is why Vermont tops the list, and is the state with the highest rate of illicit drug use. Utah just happens to be the state with the lowest rate of illicit drug use. Only around 4% of people have admitted to using drugs in the past month in Utah. Vermont didn't just rank highest regarding use of one drug, but use of many, from cocaine to marijuana. The drug abuse problem in Vermont can be linked to many every day life features including, but not limited to "weather, politics, and proximity to big cities." Marijuana accounts for a big portion of the drug use in Vermont. 13% of people in Vermont admit to have used marijuana in the past month. Vermont has also had problems with drug trafficking because they have many state highways which feed into major cities. Both the abuse of heroine and prescription drugs has seen a dramatic increase in the past few years.

Analysis: Yay! I am glad this is not Texas! Now none of the other states have another reason to hate us! Back on a serious note, even though Vermont does rank highest with 15% of people saying they have used drugs in the past month, it actually surprises me that the number percentage is so low. I was expecting anywhere from 30-35% when I first read about the survey being conducted. It's good to know that not as many people are using than I thought were. I wished they would have gone more in debt to see if income, race, age, gender, had an impact on the usage.
