"Pair with Down syndrome crowned homecoming king and queen, a first in Florida" - Natalie H. - Class 2

Today, two students in Flroida with down syndrome were awarded to be the homecoming king and queen in Florida, as Mike Krumboltz from Yahoo! News declares. The article was featured today (10-14-13) just 9 hours ago.

Prior Knowledge: Now, I have the luxury of going to an arts magnet high school, were the academics are fabulous, the students are nice, and there are no cliche groups of students in the whole building. However, I can almost guarantee 8/10 that it would be the exact opposite at a regular high school. However, it's nice to see  something new. Although I don't know what makes a couple with down syndrome any different from any other teenagers, it's nice to see the lovely couple win this thing. Besides, I would prefer to acknowledge the kids who know the essence of daily trails rather than some kids who go looking for trouble. So kudos to them!

  2. I agree! People who are given the acknowledgement of something like that should be Simone who deserves it and not someone who doesn't doesn't. - Emily Gray 5th period

  3. I think this story is really sweet but again, I dont know if it was pressing enough to make the news.

  4. I think that it's great that the school did something different than usual but might it be a little patronizing?

  5. I have a member of my family who has William Syndrome. It's somewhat like Down Syndrom. These type of people have feelings and want nothing more than to be accepted just like the other normal kids do. They would never have the opportunity if people didn't step out of the box and do special things such as this.
