1991 Murder Case Closed- Devon Travis

Earlier this week, NYPD arrested Conrado Juarez with murder and sexual assault against his at the time 4 year old cousin, Angelica Castillo. Angelica's body was found in 1991 in a cooler, bruised and decomposed, so much that detective couldn't ever identify who the child was. Every year on July 23 (the day they found angelica's body) they hold a memorial for her and ask for tips of who the girl could be. This past July, an anonymous tip sent detectives looking at Juarez as a suspect, and after they arrested him, he admitted to his crime. With the help of his now dead sister, Balvena Juarez Ramirez, he discarded the body after smothering her to death and raping the little girl. A few years after they found Angelica's body, detectives bought her a plot of land and buried her for respect. The matched Angelica's DNA to that of her mother's in order to find Juarez.

I'm glad that they finally found peace and closure to this little girl's death, and punishment for Juarez's crime, but if only this had come a little sooner than 22 years. This shows America's technology in crime investigation and in science-- the article speaks of how DNA profile wasn't invented until 2011, so without that it would be even harder to identify her. They also talked about how no one had reported a missing persons file for Angelica, which makes me question how much the parents cared for their daughter. If your child was gone without your knowing his whereabouts, wouldn't you be worried? They didn't even bother to acknowledge her disappearance, which bothers me and their loving nature towards their daughter. And lastly, the fact that the detectives valued this little girl to pay for her burial shows the caring side of human nature and Americans that they can care enough to let Angelica rest in peace. Now she truly can because justice is served.
