Sam Schwall 1st Period: Senate Gets A Dose of Scolding With Its Morning Prayer

I chose the article, Senate Gets A Dose of Scolding With Its Morning Prayer, by Ailsa Chang. The story takes a look at Senate Chaplain Barry C. Black’s morning prayers that have included reprimanding lawmakers regarding the government shutdown. There is a question as to whether this is appropriate. With the cancelling of his weekly Bible study for Senate, Black hasn’t been paid since the shutdown and some believe that it is part of his role to take a stand on these issues. As he considers himself a “policy adviser,” he has taken his spiritual role to one of political advice.

This article was written an American journalist for NPR. The author maybe have been making her views known in the article as it is a very complex issue. NPR has been known to be a more liberal news provider but this story seems to be relatively unbiased. The article was posted on October 13th, and as we’re in the midst of the government shutdown, it is especially valid. I wasn’t actually familiar with the ritual of a senate prayer. This article was written to inform American’s of the Senate Chaplain response to the government shutdown and to provide a fresh perspective on the issue. We can conclude that Black will continue to make his opinion known through his prayer.
