Summary: Just after 11 pm, an 18year old gunman opened fire at a prom in Wisconsin, injuring two. A boy, and his prom date from out-of-state were injured as they exited the school. The gunman, Jakob Wagner, had a high powered rifle, and a large ammunition clip. Wagner died en route to the hospital, the girl has been discharged, and the boy is undergoing surgery for non-life threatening injuries. After the shooting, everyone in the prom was escorted out.
Analysis: This issue is becoming more and more common in today's society. Obviously, this can be synthesized to when the first amendments were created, the second being the write to bear arms. However, events like this should make us stop and question, does every citizen have the right to bear arms? Clearly, the regulations in place are not sufficient enough in preventing a multitude of disasters. This also points to mental health care reform as well. Stepping outside of our borders, and examining the continent of austrailia, where effective gun laws and restrictions have been put in place, is is clear there is a way to combat gun violence. Although the argument can be posed that guns do not kill, people do, I still believe there is something we can do about this issue. You can't control people, but you can control what they have access to.
