North Florida School Board Restricts Access to Transgender Bathroom--Becca Brandt 4th

A school board in Florida has decided to restrict access to school bathrooms based on a person's biological gender. The Marion County School Board came to the resolution that they would ban transgender students from using the bathroom of the gender that they identify with. The Board states that transgender people are not a protected class under federal or state law. This ruling by the board goes against many federal court rulings. The issue came up when a teacher complained that a transgender student, born female, was using the men's restroom.

This problem seems similar to the era of segregation and the Civil Right's Movement. Blacks were forced to use separate bathrooms, as well as basically all public places. I understand how the issue with transgenders makes some uncomfortable, but they are people, just like us. What some states and schools are doing is creating separate bathrooms for them to use, which is better than forcing them to use a bathroom that does not fit who they want to be. I think that the Marion County School Board is being a little ridiculous and harsh.
