The Impact of Social Medias by Amanda Garcia

In this article a women's ex-boyfriend posts an embarrassing picture of her on Facebook. Her current boyfriend sees it and then decides to call authorities with a hoax phone call, stating "a false threat about a passenger with "liquid explosive" aboard Flight 1267." Christopher Shell, the man accused of having explosives, was shortly arrested on Thursday, but no liquid explosives were found. Kenneth W. Smith has since been arrested for up to 10 years and a fine of $250,000 according to federal prosecutors. Also, in the end Shell ended up getting arrested for having outstanding warrants, for a marijuana charge.

My opinion on this event is that we can't abuse the benefits of all the social media we have. Sometimes we post too much, that it may be hurtful, in this case the post enraged Smith to go overboard. Smith showed poor judgement by trying to get back to Shell. Especially since it interfered with safe air travel. Of course, the use of social media in this case was just a tool in several misjudgments.

  1. Social Media really has been such a great invention with many defaults. People use social media in the most ridiculous ways. However, this article seems to also raise the awareness of the person doing the "accusing." Since Shell was never found with explosives, it seems to me that the current boyfriend of the woman was just jealous and reckless. Explosives are nothing to be taken lightly these days. Smith should not be able to get away with accusing someone of something out of anger.

  2. This whole scandal is ridiculous. I mean, could the girl really not find any other way to get back at her ex? Also, air safety is NOT something to joke around with! I personally don't have a Facebook but it's stories like these that freak me out. People definitely abuse social media rights. I think personal things like this should stay off the internet! I'm truly embarrassed for these ridiculous people and their judgemet skills.
