Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg has recently clashed with Netflix regarding the streaming platform and their film "Roma" which received three Oscar wins in February. Spielberg has made clear that he does not believe that films that do not require a run to the local movie theater should be in the running to receive an Oscar nomination. Netflix, in response, explained their mission in making the art of film more accessible to those who don't have to ability to go to the movie theater at their fingertips.
Though a little earlier in the twentieth century that what we are now studying in class, film shifted from silent films to talking pictures. The motion picture industry has been changing each year since its birth. Though there is something very special about going to the movie theater, the world of entertainment is rapidly changing and a platform that has met the demands of a fast-paced society should not be excluded from an awards show when their work, though it may irk a 72 year old director, is fantastic.

We love a good Netflix battle. Good work!!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do not want the movie theatre experience to disappear from society, art should be able to be appreciated and rewarded no matter what platform it chooses to present itself on.
