This article stated that more than 10 million people in the Midwest and Great Plains in the United States are facing flood warnings. These floods could be "major and historical river flooding" according to the National Weather Service. The Missouri and Mississippi river basins are where so far at least three people have died already. The forecasters said that the heavy rains and melting snow that overflowed the Missouri River have forced hundreds out of their homes and even forced the U.S. Strategic Command base to reduce its operations Sunday. In Nebraska a 50 year old farmer was swept away by the floods while he was trying to help someone else, who also ultimately drowned. In Iowa, a man was submerged in the floods and died. The officials are very worried about the severity of these floods as the rain continues.
I feel that in the past few years, the weather has caused many dangerous floods and wonder if there is a better way to warn citizens in advance that the floods are coming. I would think with all of the technology we have that there would be better ways to predict these floods and make sure to evacuate these areas. I hope that there are advances in the future to prevent deaths due to flooding and weather related emergencies.
