Parkland Student Suicides - Chloe Meinershagen

https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/24/us/parkland-student-second-suicide/index.html

Saturday evening a student enrolled in Parkland High school in Florida died in what police are calling "apparent suicide." Police are unclear if the suicide has any connection to the shooting at the high school that occurred last year. This student's death is another stack onto the mourning of the Parkland community, as another student, Sydney Aiello, committed suicide last Sunday. She survived the Parkland shooting, but according to her parents, she suffered from diagnosed PTSD and survivors guilt. This is all in reference to the Parkland Shooting from Feb 14th, 2018. 17 people, 14 students and 3 staff members, killed by a gunman who has been indicted on 17 counts of murder.

Previously to this article, I was unaware of the affects of the Parkland Shooting on its community. Since they recently passed the anniversary of the shooting, I can understand how that would add a level of guilt and stress to someone's already guilty state. I feel so incredibly sorry for the families who once rejoiced their children survived the shooting, to then realize they hadn't truly survived, mentally. School shootings have begun to quiet down in the media, and yet they are still occurring and still such an important topic to have discussions about. I can compare this to the worst American school shooting, May 7th, 2007, at Virginia Tech, where 33 students and faculty died. I now wonder what sort of back lash and effects on the people and the community occurred from that shooting. We don't often think to check up on a school or a community or a country after there has been a horrendous event. We mostly hear the bad news, feel sorry, and move on. But the communities cannot move on so easily, and unfortunately, neither could two students, in Parkland's case.

  1. It is tragic to see that even after living through something as traumatic as a school-shooting, the pain doesn't go away. I can only hope that the two students are in a better place now, and that counseling is offered freely to anyone who might need it.
