Under the settlement of a lawsuit, faith-based adoption agencies in Michigan that receive taxpayers funding are no longer allowed to discriminate against LGBTQ couples looking to adopt. Two lesbian couples sued the state saying that they were rejected from adopting a child by St. Vincent Catholic Charities and Bethany Christian Services. Under the settlement, state-funded child welfare agencies cannot refuse child foster care or adoption services if it conflicts with their beliefs. States such as Texas, Alabama, and others have laws that allow agencies to turn down prospective couples if they violate the beliefs of the agency.
This article cites a few people who support this bill, as they know that if couples are discriminated against for their sexuality, children are being deprived of loving homes. I'm really glad that we're taking steps to improve the lives of LGBTQ couples and their families. While we obviously still have a long way to go, this is an improvement. Hopefully this will spur other states to revise their laws to decrease discrimination. Another bill that was made to help fight discrimination was Lyndon B. Johnson's Voting Rights Act of 1965.
