"Purdue University bans Netflix, other streaming services for students in their academic buildings"
Purdue University has banned Netflix, Hulu, and other popular (or more unknown) streaming services in it's academic buildings for students as a result of the constant in-class distraction they provide, and the disrespect that is shown to lecturers because of it. We are currently in an age of mass media and technology where iPhones and Samsungs and iMacs and Chromebooks are ubiquitous. They provide constant distraction and, while they have added a lot of value to our world, they have taken away many things including vital skills like face to face interaction, communication, optimism, and problem solving.
Albert Einstein once warned president FDR of the colossal damage atomic bombs would do to the world, and he was entirely correct. National relationships were destroyed along with international peace, and the atomic bomb brought about the normalisation of civilian attacks, ultimately contributing to the rise of terrorist attacks. So when Einstein said he "feared the day technology [would] surpass our human connection" and that "the world [would] have a generation of idiots," we truly should have been more wary of technology. It truly has distracted us from what was deemed important by both early and modern philosophers, and it is paramount that we find a way to incorporate technology into our world without allowing it to surpass and overwhelm us.
I really enjoy your comparison of Einstein's perspective of technology in regards to the colossal role it has taken on in our lives today. For despite the short burst of benefits technology can give us on the daily, we must look at the threatening hole which these devices are capable of detonating in the long run.
ReplyDeleteOk but Netflix isn't a nuke... leave me and my streaming alone
