The biggest story of the week and likely of the month was the shooting in new Zealand. 49 were killed with almost that many being hospitalized. The majority of those hospitalized are intensive care and it is unknown how many among them will survive. This tragic waste of human life is undoubtedly abhorrent all on it's own but it's made even worse by the fact it took place in a mosque, a sacred place of worship that should by all accounts be safe. The victims included people of all ages, from a toddler of only three to elderly men and women. However, in contrast to the U.S., Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has promised change to come to their current gun laws though has yet to specify what those changes will be. She plans to meet with Muslim communities in order to assess damages and develop a plan going forward to prevent horrendous tragedies like this from occurring again.
It's hard to express how awful I find this tragedy. It's a tragic loss of human life and my heart goes out to the victims and that entire community. I am saddened but I am also angered by our president's assertion that the rapid spread white nationalism isn't a concerning issue, "it's a small group of people that have very, very serious problems, I guess." This is made even worse by the fact that he has blamed muslims and refugees for previous mass shootings, only now for them to be the victim. This shooting reminds me of the one that occurred at the pulse nightclub a few years ago. Both resulted in 49 deaths and were hate crimes against a vulnerable minority. However, I hope that this one will actually result in a change in the world in which we live instead of mere thoughts and prayers. I think that there is real hope of that since New Zealand doesn't have the 2nd amendment in it's way unlike the U.S.

I think it is a complete waste to kill humans for no reason
ReplyDeleteI agree, I hope this opens peoples eyes and results in a change of the world we all live in ~ Stephannie Hernandez
ReplyDeleteDays after, this is not any less horrific. The prime minister has handled the aftermath quite well and I hope her actions influence the rest of the world in gun reform
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, I hope that the shooting will result in changes that will stop these mass murders and prevent innocent groups of people being targeted in the future. Gun reform laws and mental health reforms are definitely necessary in this world that we live in.
