Brazen Shooting Traumatizes Dutch City, Three Days After Christchurch Killings- Martina D’Orso

In Utrecht, Netherlands at 10:30 AM, a shooting or terrorist attack occurred on a train. The suspect, a 37 year old Turkish immigrant by the name of Gokmen Tanis, opened gunfire in the area of Utrecht mostly inhabitted by  Turkish and Moroccan immigrants. Tanis was a man with a previous criminal record who is now facing a rape charge and prior arrest. In this shooting three people were killed and five were injured. The thought of why Tanis did commited this shooting is still eminent, wether it was based off white supremacy remarks the Turkish President made or because of an argument he had with a relative, terrorism still plays a big role in this shooting.
This article was written by Milan Schreuer and Richard Perez-Peña on March 18, 2019. Previous to reading this article I had heard about the shooting in New Zealand but not this shooting in the Netherlands. This only shows how terrible and unsafe our world is turning, how these shootings are becoming commonplace. We can link this terrorist attack to the Thalys train attack in 2015 when a man opened gunfire on a train going from Amsterdam to Paris. He was later stopped by a group of passangers who were later honored for their heroic actions. He confessed to wanting to get revenge on Americans for Syrian bombings. When we fight violence with more violence it shows the steady decline into a civilization who goes in circles to try and stop a “bigger evil,” not knowing that maybe the bigger evil is the violence we are using. We should reflect within as a society and see where we are truly going wrong to be enveloped in such violence.

  1. It is completely bone chilling at which the speed of these attacks occurs. It’s almost like some kind of sick popcorn effect, if a terrorist attack occurs in one part of the world, it creates a ripple of other terrorist attacks. This proves just how hostile our world has become.

  2. It is so sad that events like these occur all over the world, all the time. I think that as a coalition of nations, we need to figure out how to stop this, not just individually. Great article.
