This CNN article is part of the As Equals series. It discusses Noura Hussein, a 19 year old that is now facing the death penalty for killing her husband who was forcing her to have sex with him. This took place when Hussein was 15 years old in her native country of Sudan. In Sudan the legal age of marriage is 10 years old and any kind of rape that takes place after marriage isn't illegal, no matter if the bride is a minor.
This is another article that I have read that makes me incredibly angry at the rights of women in the world. The fact that young girls can get married to middle aged men and then have no rights within that marriage is absolutely appalling. What kind of world are we living in that girls and women have no rights? And when they defend themselves they are faced with the death penalty? This girl wanted to become a judge, she was educated and everything, but of course the moment she is married all rights are lost; not even her own parents cared for her after that. They were the ones who turned her into the police! I know it's hard for those in the United States to help the cases of people in other countries, but the more we acknowledge the problem the more can spread the call for change. This relates to the colonial times in which women had no rights and were meant to be the caretakers of the home.
