Texas Tornadoes Kill 11-Nicholas Watson, 9th

Summary:

On December 26, 2015, 11 people were killed after several tornadoes struck the Dallas area, causing major damage and many injuries. In Garland, 8 people were killed when an EF-4 tornado crossed a highway throwing unsuspecting drivers and passengers into the air. 3 more people were confirmed dead when another tornado hit Collin County. The same tornado that hit Garland roared into Rowlett, a neighboring community, where it decreased to an EF-3, but still injured 23 people and destroyed 39 homes. Along with that, another EF-3 tornado spawned in Ellis County and wreaked havoc in Ovilla, Red Oak and Waxahachie, once again destroying many homes and other buildings. [G1] [G2] After the storms, many were shocked in amazement at how the death toll and injuries weren't higher due to the amount of destruction that was created during the storms.[G3]

Analysis:

This truly devastating and heartbreaking incident shows just how unpredictable and unmerciful mother nature can be. It really is weird to think that something of this magnitude could ever strike so close to home because incidents like this are something you see in movies. I do think reality presents itself through this tragedy by showing that no one and no place is too special to be untouched by the destructive hands of nature. Although the destruction is catastrophic and the memories of this event will never be forgotten, through those who witnessed and lived through it, I believe that now more than ever we see the full force of community and [G4] people coming together to support each other and help mend the losses so many endured. This event also hits home knowing that the houses of people I know are no longer there, and seeing how this whole situation has/will change their lives forever is so saddening. Although after letting the full force of this situation sink in, we must now try to pick up the pieces of ours and others, rebuild even stronger, don’t forget those who died and eventually move on as best we can. This day after Christmas tragedy will never soon be forgotten.

  2. Yeah, it's just so crazy to wrap your head around. Like, we see it in the news hitting places like Oklahoma every year, and we think "wow, that's awful" but the stark reality of it is realized whenever it happens so close. I mean, places I drive by every day to school are just... gone. I had the privilege to help clean-up the damage to a farm of one of the families from our church, and it was an eye opening experience as it sank in that these peoples homes are just piles of rubble.

  4. My dad has a medical office in Rowlett next to the Lake Pointe Medical Center, and all the buildings in his complex were untouched- and yet, within 2 blocks, homes and businesses were flattened and plastered in debris. It's crazy how close some people came to losing everything.
