Lack of Diversity by Shelby Linker, 8th period

Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith have decided to boycott the annual Oscars award ceremony due to it's lack of diversity and representation of African Americans. This is the second year in a row where no person of color was nominated. Many people are upset about this lack of diversity and have taken to the internet to voice their thoughts.

With all of the opportunities open to everyone it's hard to believe that not one African American was good enough to win an award or even be nominated. It's already hard enough to be treated as a minority but to have a lack of representation at all is outrageous. There were many great performances this year by people of color which leads you to believe there is something beneath the surface that we can't see completely. If this was the first year that this happened I would probably think it was a coincidence but seeing as this is the second time in a row you start to become suspicious. Spike Lee has used Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday to speak up about the subject and announce his lack of attendance. Martin Luther King Jr. protested for equality, which also seems to be the case right not. It's kind of sad how we haven't been able to progress past this point after so many years. There are still the same problem as there were back then but they just seem fixed because people aren't as open about discrimination. I hope this lack of representation doesn't continue.
