Detroit schools being shut down -Carli Copell, Ped.6

Detroit Teachers demand fix to 'hazardous school'

This article is about Spain elementary/middle school in Detroit. The kids going to this school have no access to the gymnasium or the playground. These kids are forced to play and have "recess" in the hallways. The school is in terrible condition. The floors are warped, rat infestations, mold in the ceilings. The city has engaged a "sickout" on this campus, keeping students from attending school because of the unsuitable conditions. The teachers feel that they have failed and let down all of the students current and past, that they've had.

Synthesis: A very sad situation to hear about. These teachers do everything for their students and only want the best for them. With my mom being a third grade teacher, I understand how much teachers care for their students and education. This school has not only put kids' health in danger but has made them stop coming/wanting to come to school. All young people deserve an education and this school cannot give that to them. This can relate back to the beginning of school systems in America, and the segregation of schools. When schools were segregated by color, the African American schools tended to be in a worser condition than the schools of the white kids. No matter what color, religion, person you are, you deserve an education and a decent place to learn.

Where is the funding from the government in this situation? This really makes me sad, and these children's deprivation of a wonderful education will rid them of an imagination and curiosity to learn.

  2. This is just so sad to hear. I'm surprised the government, whether that be state or the country's, take control of this situation and improve the standards.

  3. Matthew Homsher 9th- It's sad that Detroit has gotten so bad that kids can't even go to school. It's been like this for too long. There needs to be some steps taken to fix both the economy and the education system in Detroit.

  4. I believe that we should help out the school like these that are stuggling to make school an enjoyable place for kids to be. The teachers do seek the best interest for their kids, so it must be very disheartening to see them unhappy or leave the school entirely.

  5. These kids deserve so much better. It's everyone's job, whether you apart of that community or not, to make sure that the future leaders of our country have a proper place to learn and prosper.

I hope some action is taken to reform these schools.
