Contaminated Water In Flint, Michigan by Brenna Hale(6th Period)

President Obama has declared a state of emergency in Flint, Michigan where the water has become contaminated with lead. This is cause after a change of supplier in 2014. $5 million will be unlocked from the government, but Governor Rick Snyder requested $31 million saying that the need of the city far exceeds what the government is capable of providing. A test revealed increased lead levels in water and children s' blood levels, this can cause learning disabilities and behavior issues. The singer Cher said she would donate 180,000 water bottles to the city and that she is ashamed of what is happening in the middle of our country.
The purpose of this article is to make the rest of our country and the rest of the world aware of the relation between the government and states of emergency. Before I read this article I had no idea this was going on. This event reminds me of the air pollution in the slums of New York City during the Gilded Age. At that time there was no government to fund improvement for this issue because immigrants came by boat everyday, but in both cases there are/were real people with real problems.

  1. Matthew Homsher 9th- That's not good. Lead poisoning is a serious problem. In fact, that's why we have graphite in our pencils instead of lead because there were too many deaths caused by accidental lead poisoning.

  2. Lead is dangerous when consumed, especially to children, and the fact that this happened is so upsetting.

  3. This is so sad to hear that children are being harmed because of the lead contamination to the water.

  4. Truly nerve racking that we could be at risk of lead poisoning just by drinking water, its ironic water is supposed to be the key to human survival but in this case its harming people.
