CHEERLEADERS SEEK BETTER PAY Julia Woltjen (4th period)

SUMMARY:
Recently many NFL teams have been sued by their cheerleaders and team for the low pay, which at times was below minimum wage. The most recent lawsuit was spearheaded by Buffalo Bills cheerleaders, which ended up being a success and awarded the cheerleaders close to a million dollars. Not only is the ay a problem for these cheerleaders, but also the contracts and regulations these women have to live under while they are employed by the teams. Those regulations outline how the women will, behave, workout, and how they will appear physically. After all this mistreatment its no wonder the cheerleaders haven't spoken up sooner.

ANALYSIS:
This is in my mind is a clear continuation of the fight for equality in the workforce. Nowadays women have almost all of the same rights as men do, which is more than we can say for the past. Yet still in a sport so heavily dominated by men, the women on the field are having to fight for equality. Until recently it was up to the team to decide whether or not they wanted to look at their cheer team as employees, which also gave them the option of how much to pay or not to pay. Clearly some were unfair. California senator recently made it a law that these women must be employees of the teams they cheer for, which at least granted them minimum wage. There is progress being made in the fight for equality in the workforce, it's just sad that it has taken us this long to try and fix it.

  1. It is very unfair that these women are not getting paid well, because like you said, their lives are basically controlled by the contracts they sign. They have so many restrictions caused by these contracts that they deserve far more than minimum wage.

  2. That's so crazy and cheerleaders work so hard. It requires so much and their whole lives revolved around it they should be getting so much more money.
