With all-white Oscar acting nominations for the past two years, it has generated outcry. The Academy is changing its voting process, recruiting more women and minority members for the board. Some people oppose this because ethnicity should not be taken into account when evaluating accomplishments.

I think that this is a step in the right direction because it can decrease the possibility of racism playing a role in nominations. This issue between diversity and competency relates to affirmative action in universities, which gives underrepresented groups equal access to education. By aiming for more diversity in schools, it discriminates against people who are qualified by merit. The UC system is partially dictated by affirmative action, for example. Similarly, should race be accounted for in Oscar nominations? Or should it be solely based on merit? There's no doubt that minority actors have talent - do you think there's discrimination. This is very similar to woman suffrage movements and woman taking a stand for what they believe in, such as in the 20's.
