Joint Chiefs Chairman: "We have not contained ISIS" by Caroline North 9th period

Marine General Joseph Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff spoke to the House Armed Services Committee on Dec. 1, 2015 and quoted that the United States has "not contained" ISIS, contradictory to what President Obama said last month days before the Paris attacks.  Dunford explained that the terrorist group has "tactically" been constrained.  However, "strategically", ISIS has expanded significantly.  ISIS has mastered the use of social media to recruit members and supporters.  In addition, studies and analysis show that supporters of ISIS in the United States range in all different types of ages, races, education, and family backgrounds.

As the world moves into a new political era, ISIS and conflicts in the Middle East are now the new sources of hostility, antagonism, and animosity similar to times leading in to both World War I and World War II.  As the terrorist group moves to target many different nations such as the attacks in Paris and several nations proclaim efforts will be made to put an end to ISIS, tensions are heading towards new extremes.  These current events address the theme of world peace and if we will ever be able to reach it.  At the end of WWII, over 60 million lives were lost, and despite the traumatic events, and the horrific amount of people killed, the human race has still not learned from its mistakes and realized how necessary it is that we arrive at some sense of peace.
