On Thursday, December 3, 2105, an unlicensed Cambodian doctor has been jailed for 25 years after being convicted of infecting more than 100 people with HIVs. The unlicensed doctor, Yem Chroeum, was found guilty of infecting people with HIV by reusing dirty needles. The case has uncovers a problem in many parts of rural Cambodia, where illegal doctors are the only option for medical care. According to the Ministry of Health, almost 4,000 illegal health-service providers are still operating in the country. Panicked residents and patients in Rokar village, where Chroeum was treating, went immediately to get tested after reports of mass infections. Charges against the illegitimate doctor included intentionally transmitting the HIV virus and running a clinic without permission from the Ministry of Health. This article was written by Katie Hunt on December 3, 2105. This article is important because it reminds the world that even though the newspaper says third world countries have medical support, it doesn't mean they are equipped with medically trained physicians. I think the idea of someone reusing a needle is absolutely disgusting and obviously unhygienic. The "doctor" deserves the jail time he has been given because no one in their right mind would think that "providing care" for patients would not include sterilizing medical tools. This article is relevant because there are a ton of other countries experiencing the same lack of expert medical attention.
