Classes in India teach boys about equality - Kate Fehan 8th Period

In Pune, India, new classes are being run by the Equal Community Foundation to help combat inequality. These classes are for teenage boys and aim to change the way they view and treat women in an often patriarchal society. The classes talk to boys about many issues facing women such as harassment and violence. As a graduating project, the boys do something to help women in the area or bring awareness to certain issues. The program has become a very positive influence in the community and is gaining the respect of many people.

This program is a brilliant idea and it would be great if the ECF could reach their goal of 100 more programs in cities all over India. In order to really get equality for women, men must step up and join the fight. Just like in the Women's Suffrage movement in the 1800s and 1900s, men are sometimes the only ones who can get other men to change (mostly because they won't listen to women). I think this will be a great help in changing the prevailing attitude towards women in India.

  1. This is amazing! India is known for their patriarchal system, and their portrayal of women as objects, but this can truly change India. If the rest of the world takes notes, gender equality may be easier achieved.

  2. This is so awesome! Love that they speak to boys about womens hardships, as they are often oblivious to it, so they can be a generation of change when interacting with other men and women. So cool that they include a volunteer project at the end of their program as well!
