Alexis Farrell, 5th Period: School principal bans Santa, Thanksgiving, and Pledge of Allegiance

Recently in New York, a principal decided that Santa Claus was banned. Also, the students aren't reciting the Pledge of Allegiance anymore. Christmas parties are called "winter celebrations" and "harvest festivals" are replacing Thanksgiving. The principal of PS(Public School) 169, Eujin Jaela Kim claims that this is how students and teachers will learn how to be "politically correct." The assistant principal explained to the staff that all of the students celebrate different holidays and how they have to be "sensitive" to the diverse families.

I believe that all religions matter but not to this extent. When these students go into the real world, their bosses or coworkers will not accommodate to their beliefs by having "winter celebrations" or "harvest festivals." Everyone has freedom to their own opinion. People will say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hanukkah" around the holidays and yes, this might hurt some feelings, but I think that if one wants to make everyone say "Happy Holidays" so they can feel better, that is quite selfish. For the most part, decorations around the U.S. are Christmas based and it would be hard to tear all of those down so that everyone is happy. If one is Jewish, they have the freedom to put a blow-up menorah in their front yard and if one is Christian, they have the freedom to make the Star of David out of Christmas lights and put it on the side of their house. In the past, religion has been an issue and even determined what political party you belonged on. For example, members of the American Anti- Slavery Society were mostly advocates of the Christian religion and this society eventually led to the formation of the Republican Party in 1854, Currently, race and religion are huge issues in the 2016 election.

  1. I completely agree with your analysis. People nowadays are getting too hot headed over the simplest things and religious beliefs.

  2. I agree with you and Jsway. People are getting worked up over the little things. I do think that people need to think about everyones different beliefs, but I don't think saying the Pledge of Allegiance is religious.

  3. This article makes me angry. I don't understand why people can't express their religion without making someone mad. It's not like if you talk about Santa you're trying to convert someone to be Christian! People should be able to respect each other's beliefs without feeling the need to tell someone they're wrong-Sophie Kurzius (8)

  4. I don't think religion should be banned, but I think they should be tolerant to different forms of religions and whatever symbols go along with that. I can understand how it would be frustrating for everyone's form of religion to be touched upon except for yours, but we should open the floor to different religions as long as people can be open minded !!!
