The article starts with quotes from a man named John Jackson who kills elephants for sport. "I feel no remorse about any of the elephants I have killed for sport in Africa.“Most elephants I have ended up shooting were in self-defense,” he claims yet he also paid up to 60,000$ for a permit that allowed him to fly to Africa and kill elephants for sport. “They’re bullies,” “They murder for a living.” he says. Yet these elephants numbers are in rapid decline. A new documentary called "Blood Ivory" features John as well as a man named Leon Lamprecht who works to preserve the species. Leon works with an anti-poaching patrol in Garamba. Elephant tusk trade is growing and the prices as well. Leon states, “If we’re not successful, there will be no elephants remaining in Africa. You and me will be among the fortunate few who have seen a live elephant.” Poachers have illegally killed 100,000 elephants in the last few years, and the poachers are becoming more and more "efficient". The US has put bans on elephant tusk trade, but that does not stop all of the violence towards these victomized elephants.

This article by Kieran Mulvaney, Discovery News, Is a great article to raise awareness for the poaching of African elephants. It is a very sad topic that is usually not taken as seriously as it should be. These poachers in Africa are the equivalent of Indians in the ice age who killed the Woolly Mammoth for food, but also for sport and killed them off. People need to realize that this issue is a matter of life or death, and they could very well become extinct in a short amount of time. We need to start doing something about it.
I agree. People do not realize that these elephants are a big part of our world. When someone kills another human for "sport" or other pointless reasons, it is considered heinous, so why don't they feel the same about elephants?

ReplyDeleteThe fact that some people claim not to feel any remorse for poor animals that they have killed saddens me. I don't know why some humans are like this and can't get into their heads that when a species dies out they're gone forever, no do-overs.
It is upsetting to see that some people believe that hunting elephants is a sport. I also agree that in a result of the "sport", it could extinct the species all together.

I mean it is sad to think that sometime soon elephants could go extinct beacise of hunting, but if they want something done then they should make laws in Africa.
