Summary:
Shannon Johnson died in the San Bernardino shooting defending his officemate
from the attack. Johnson worked at the Inland Regional Center, a state-run
facility that serves individuals with developmental disabilities. He was one of
14 people killed in the mass shooting and Denise Peraza says she owes her life
to him. When the shots started, Johnson and Peraza had been joking about how
the large clock on the wall might be broken because time was passing so slowly.
Then, they heard 60 shots and took cover under a table. Johnson kept his left
arm wrapped around Denise and kept saying I got you. She said after the event, “I
believe I am still here today because of this amazing man. This amazing,
selfless man who always brought a smile to everyone’s face in the office with
his lively stories about his hometown back in Georgia, who will be deeply
missed by all.” She called Johnson “my friend, my hero” and said “I will always
remember him saying these three words ‘I got you.’”
Synopsis: These
tragedies keep happening and nothing is being done about them. People like
Shannon Johnson are continually getting killed for no reason. Good people
shouldn’t have to die every day. We need to take action. It doesn’t need to be
the right thing, there doesn’t have to be a solution, just something to show
that the situation is being addressed. It’s sad to wake up every day and be
driving down the highway seeing the American flag at half-mast wondering “Who’s
died now?” It’s depressing to think that this is the state of our world today.
It doesn’t have to be like this.
