Varsity Football Player Dies By: Zaria Chambers 5th period

Sixteen year old Tom Cutinella died earlier this week after colliding on the field with an opponent. Tom Cutinella attended Shoreham-Wading River High School in New York. He suffered from a serious head injury while playing on Wednesday night. He was rushed to the nearest hospital where he later died. Tom Cutinella makes the third person to die in a short amount of time due to an incident that happened on the field. Many of Tom's closest friends and relatives are grieving his loss. One friend said that he "touched everyone in his community very deeply."

This is a very sad situation. There needs to be something more done that could help protect football players. There have been many incidents that have involved football players recently and I know that people are trying to create more protective gear for football players to prevents things like this from happening.

  1. This is so sad and serious. It is important for sports to be competitive but in a safe environment and manner/action.

  2. I am not very big on football but whenever I do watch games (which is seldom), I do see the difference between someone tackling someone to get the ball and someone attacking the person directly. Could it be that there was something wrong with the opponent or the opponent did this intently rather than it be a fatal accident?

  4. football is a contact sport and people are going to get hurt it is really unfortunate that he died but that does not happen very frequently and there would be no way to keep the sport and guarantee 100% safety. Its just unrealistic.
