Summary:
Passengers on a crowded San Francisco commuter train did not notice a man waving a .45-caliber pistol at them, due to being distracted by their electronic devices in hand. The gunman was 30 year old Nikhom Thephakaysone. He fired at a random passenger (20 year old Justin Valdez) killing him instantly. Thephakaysone didn't even seem to try to hide his actions with his gun and still no one noticed. He was very close to the passengers too, but the people's faces remained in their electronics, completely oblivious to their surroundings. The man pleaded not guilty of murder, but security video footage proved him wrong.
Analysis:
I find it to be very disturbing that people of today's time are so wrapped up in their world of electronics (cell phones, computers, tablets, etc.) that they have absolutely no idea what is going on around them. Technology in America has evolved so much to the point where it is almost impossible for anyone to go one day without using some sort of electronic device. This is useful and helpful in many ways, but it should not take over people's awareness. To me, your life is more important that what is displayed behind a bright little phone screen.

It's horrible that society is that consumed and distracted by technology that yet don't even realize it when a gun is being pointed right in there face.

ReplyDeleteThis is incredibly disappointing to hear. It's sad to hear that our society feels so dependent on technology that they can't be off it for one second. Truly awful.
ReplyDeleteThis is why people should give up material goods, burn their money and IDs, and hitch hike to alaska.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awful situation. It's very unfortunate to hear about the passenger killed, but then again, how can you be so wrapped up into your electronics that you don't even notice a gun being waved at you? This should serve as a wake-up call to our technology-obsessed society.
