"Helping Disabled Vets Rebuild Their Lives" - Camille Farrar

This article, by Allie Torgan, highlights the program Sentinels of Freedom started by Michael Conklin. The program helps injured veterans receive grants for the things they need in life to become successful. Conklin started the program after his son came back from Iraq. He says he saw so many of the soldiers come home to nobody and wanted to help. Conklin speaks about how it isn’t just a check, but a relationship formed, a group of people the veterans can go to if they need something. The organization has been established in 28 states and helps soldiers with all sorts of needs, from getting drivers, to securing service dogs, to helping put the men and women through college or graduate school.
I’m so glad there are people doing things like this to help others. In a time where so many have less than tight-knit families to come home to, it is important to help these people feel loved. Especially relating to veterans, it is important to restore a sense of normality to their lives. Organizations like Sentinels of Freedom are doing very important work in this particular field. I hope the program does well and continues to help people on an even wider scale.

  1. It is sometimes thought that money is all that is needed to remedy someone's troubles or, in this case help rebuild injured veterans' life. However, knowing that you have a family that loves you and friends to be with is almost alway the greatest remedy of all.
